The Flood of ‘09

For those of you who don’t know we had quite the storm on Friday night.  Since it had also rained heavily the night before we ended up totaling 9 inches of rain in 24 hours.  Wow.  We were living in the middle of a lake.  I stepped off of our back porch into 1” of water that went clear across the street, across the park to the gazebo on the other side.  We could have taken out our canoe and rowed for two blocks in about any direction.  Next time we will!  It seems like everyone around us and half of Holland had some flooding.  Luckily we managed to start pumping early and with the help of Kevin’s brother we kept the flooding to only 4-6 inches in our basement.  You can see in the following picture that it is up to Kevin’s ankles. Now we just have to clean up and dry out so we don't end up with bigger problems.

We’ve learned a few valuable lessons from this like:
We will never finish our basement.
We will only ever have rubbermaids sitting on the floor of the basement.
We will expect that it can and probably will happen again.

In case you don’t remember this marks almost exactly one year from when it happened last year.  Lucky us.  This year was much worse as more rain fell in less time.

The kids didn’t think it was so bad.  Elinore, Toby, and their cousin Sophie had a ball splashing in the puddles in the park across the street.  We also spent some time saving the earthworms that floated to the top of the puddles.  Look at that saggy, soaking wet diaper!

This is 24th St not far from where we live (Kevin bikes this way to work each day).  There is a drainage pipe here that must have just been so overloaded that it washed the road out.  Absolutely crazy.  We went over to gawk.  The poor people that live there won’t be able to get their car out for a while!!
