Music and Pancakes

Our neice Sophie just turned one year old on Thursday, and we went to her little family party today. Remember how Elinore wanted to give Sophie a pancake for her birthday? Well, she helped Daddy make the pancake, then we put it in tupperware and wrapped it up. Elinore carried it all the way there and handed it to Sophie. This is Sophie, happily eating her birthday pancake!! I think this was her favorite gift!

This second picture isn't a great photo, but it just shows how everyone was moving, and colorful, and all the kids are helping Sophie open her other gifts.

This is my most recent completed project, and we've just passed him along to Sophie as a birthday present. Jumbo Elephant from Zoe Mellor's Knitted Toys. He came out pretty cute. I've learned a lot about seaming from this project, and I am definitely seeing an improvement. This tatamy tweed yarn is my favorite acrylic yarn ever! I have it in several colors, and I just love working with it. The blanket stitch around the ears was such a nice touch. It was that one little detail done at the very end that just made him look finished. He'll be my true test on how well my knitted toys hold together...

We've been to two concerts at Meijer Gardens this summer. They have this awesome outdoor amphitheater, and they seem to get a really great summer line-up. The first group we saw there was Nickel Creek. I think I may safely say that that was the best concert Kevin and I have ever seen. The music was wonderful and fun. The venue was intimate, but very full. The night couldn't have been more perfect with the sun setting and people pulling on cardigans just as the sun went down. If you haven't heard their music (folk/bluegrass) I highly recommend them.

On Thursday we saw our second concert there: Dar Williams/Over the Rhine. Both artists we really like. Dar is kind of hippie/folk/eclectic. She's a great story songwriter. I always love her lyrics and she's a lot of fun. Over the Rhine totally blew us away. We heard them several years ago when they played at Hope, but wow. As soon as their music started and Karin started singing, we were totally captivated. Their music is sort of eclectic rock. Their lyrics are so poetic and thoughtful which I always value in music. Just so good. They have a new album coming out this month and you can listen to it in its entirety here.

Elinore is so sweet and thoughtful. I think she learned that from her mommy :)
LOVE the elephant!

I love kids' minds! I laughed for days at Elinore's answers to your questions. I wish my parents would have written down more of the things I had said so that I/we could read them now.
That elephant is amazing!! I'm still wary of trying to knit in a circle - I just stick to rectangles for now.
You've got quite the adorable little girl.

I agree that Nickel Creek is great. If you like them, you'll definitely like the music of Janelle's cousin's band, called The Dappled Grays, full samples to be found on their myspace page. Elinore is cute as ever!
